Līgatne or "the cave city" truly is a real underrated gem of Latvia. This is one of the oldest paper production centers in Latvia as the paper was produced here since 1815. The time of prosperity of Līgatne is connected with the end of the 19th century. During this time, the paper factory developed extensive construction - they built residential houses for workers and administration, as well as a hospital, a maternity hospital, a factory club, a school, a home for the disabled and a pharmacy. The factory had a unique social model for its time: workers were given a free apartment, electricity, heating, medical care, education for children, provision for the elderly.
