The Hill of Crosses is a truly unique site in Latvia that will take your breath away! This remarkable pilgrimage site dates back to the 1830s when people began placing crosses here to pray for their loved ones lost in battles during the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth uprising against the Russian Empire. During Soviet times, the Hill of Crosses served as a peaceful protest against the regime, as locals continually returned to place more crosses, despite numerous attempts to destroy this sacred place.
In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses, and since then, it has become very popular, attracting not only locals but also tourists from around the globe.
Don't be intimidated by the fact that it is a pilgrimage site; everyone is welcome to visit this beautiful spot, regardless of their religious beliefs, as long as they respect fellow visitors.
